Sep 02 2015 - ArtistShare Celebrates 12 Years of Fan-funded Music

October 15th, 2015 will mark the end of our twelfth year of fan-funding.  This year we are submitting a record breaking nine new fan-funded recordings for consideration in the 58th Grammy Awards. ArtistShare recordings have received nine Grammy Awards and eighteen Grammy nominations to date. In 2005, Maria Schneider’s, Concert in The Garden, received a Grammy for Best Large Ensemble Album, making it the first recording to win a Grammy Award that was only available online.

ArtistShare released a number of historic firsts this year. The Gil Evans Project recorded their first live album, Lines of Color, and metal guitar legend, Alex Skolnick, produced Planetary Coalition, his first acoustic world music collaboration. John Clayton released a recording made with his musical mentor, Hank Jones, for the Parlor Series Vol. II, and Maria Schneider released The Thompson Fields, the first studio recording of her 18-piece jazz orchestra in eight years. Doug Beavers, The Requinte Trio (featuring Janis Siegel, Nanny Assis, and John Di Martino), and the Koppel+Colley+Blade Collective also released their first ArtistShare fan-funded recordings this year.

The BlueNote/ArtistShare label is a partnership forged by ArtistShare Founder and CEO, Brian Camelio, the late Chairman Emeritus of Blue Note Records, Bruce Lundvall, and current President of Blue Note Records, Don Was. Bruce Lundvall referred to the collaboration as “a key component in the future of the music business.” Brian Camelio says, “The BlueNote/ArtistShare partnership is groundbreaking, as it is the first partnership between a major label and a crowdfunding platform. I would love to see our newest release, Lines of Color [Gil Evans Project], receive the recognition that it deserves.”

We have submitted the following records for consideration:

Lines of Color – Gil Evans Project
The Gil Evans Project's second album, recorded during their fourth-annual, week-long engagement at the Jazz Standard in New York City. They performed many recently discovered works, in addition to some of Gil's classic arrangements.

The Thompson Fields – Maria Schneider Orchestra
The Thompson Fields is the Maria Schneider Orchestra's first studio record in eight years. This record exemplifies Maria's compositional prowess with pieces descriptive Maria's home in southwest Minnesota, to being inspired by the first time she heard samba in Rio. There's a piece inspired by the Birds of Paradise Project from Cornell University, and they recorded A Potter's Song, written in memory the beloved Laurie Frink.

Planetary Coalition – Alex Skolnick
Legendary guitarist, Alex Skolnick, has formed a group of 27 musicians from all over the world, including Rodrigo y Gabriela, Kiran Ahluwalia, Adnan Joubran, the NY Gypsy All Stars, and many more. The album showcases Alex's prowess as a guitarist and composer.

The Parlor Series Vol. 2 – John Clayton and Hank Jones
The Parlor Series Vol. 2: John Clayton with Hank Jones is the second installment in a series of intimate musical recordings from bassist, John Clayton. Inspired by recordings of Hank Jones and Charlie Haden, John and Hank got together to record a collection of Negro Spirituals.

Koppel + Colley + Blade Collective – Koppel Colley Blade Collective
A newly formed trio featuring Benjamin Koppel on saxophone, Brian Blade on drums, and Scott Colley on bass. The album features new compositions directly inspired by physical landscapes as well as the personal landscapes of life experience.

Titanes del Trombón – Doug Beavers
Doug teamed up with an all star-cast including Oscar Hernández, Dafnis Prieto, Luisito Guintero, Edsel Gomez, Eddie Montalvo, and many other amazing musicians to record an album of music dedicated to the trombone masters in jazz and Latin music.

Honey & Air – Requinte Trio
The Requinte Trio features 9 time Grammy Award winning solo artist and vocalist for the Manhattan Transfer, Janis Siegel, Brazilian multi-instrumentalist, Nanny Assis, and Multi-Grammy nominated pianist, John Di Martino. Honey & Air is the first collaboration between these masterful musicians, and is a true creative combustion of music.

BOP-Jeff Lorber and Chuck Loeb
BOP is a one-of-a-kind traditional bebop album that brings together world class musicians, including Rick Braun, Jeff Lorber, Chuck Loeb, Harvey Mason, Brian Bromberg, Til Bronner, Everette Harp, Eric Marienthal, Brian Dunne, Randy Brecker, and John Pattitucci. All proceeds from the recording go to the Polycystic Kidney Disease Foundation.

Reunion-Niels Lan Doky
Reunion is about reuniting with old friends after long, individual life journeys to share experiences and rekindle personal and musical relationships. For this album, Niels joined his friends Jeff "Tain" Watts and Ira Coleman for a spectacular live recording. This piano trio performs a collection of originals and standards, taking chances with each note.
