“St. Louis Blues” is the first track from the great album, New Bottle Old Wine, Gil did in 1958 for World Pacific to feature Cannonball Adderley. It opens with that short, but amazing statement from Cannonball, and sets the attitude for the whole album. I am really excited to be able to offer this classic chart, taken directly from Gil’s original manuscript, for the first time on ArtistShare®. This is a great feature for a guest artist or a standout saxophonist in the band.

As with all of Gil’s music, close attention needs to be paid to the instrumentation, as it rarely resembles a standard big band. The instrumentation for “St. Louis Blues” is as follows:

2 Reeds:
        Reed 1:  Alto Saxophone
Reed 2:  Clarinet, C Flute, Bass Clarinet
1 French Horn
3 Trumpets
3 Trombones (2 tenor trombones, 1 bass trombone)
1 Tuba
4 Rhythm (Gtr./Pno./Bass/Dms.)

Featured Soloist: Alto Sax

In addition to the score and parts, you will also receive supplemental videos in which I explain the unique history behind my discovery of this "lost" work as well as how I rehearse each of these pieces. I will let you know the potential tripping spots and the way to make each piece come alive. I've worked on bringing this music back to life for a very long time, and it is very easy for me to now predict the areas that need addressing. I am confident that I can help you bring this music to the highest level with your own group.
